The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert warning of severe heat wave conditions across Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Punjab. The alert indicates that temperatures are expected to soar significantly, posing health risks and requiring precautionary measures.
According to IMD officials, maximum temperatures in these regions are likely to remain above 45 degrees Celsius in the coming days. The department has advised residents to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, stay hydrated, and take necessary steps to protect vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.
The orange alert is part of IMD’s graded warning system, which signals that heat wave conditions are intense and could impact daily life. Authorities have been urged to prepare cooling shelters, ensure water availability, and spread awareness about heat safety practices.
Delhi has already recorded temperatures above 44 degrees Celsius in several parts, while Haryana and Punjab are witnessing similar conditions. Chandigarh too is expected to face extreme heat, with forecasts predicting further rise in mercury levels.
Health experts caution that heat waves can lead to dehydration, heat stroke, and other medical emergencies if preventive measures are not taken. Citizens are advised to wear light clothing, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak hours, and keep emergency numbers handy.
