The Opposition parties staged a stormy protest in the Lok Sabha over the reported move to change the name of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). Members accused the government of attempting to dilute the spirit of the scheme, which has long been regarded as a lifeline for rural employment.
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi flagged the issue as a direct threat to the employment guarantee provided under the Act. She stated that altering the name or structure of MGNREGA undermines the rights of millions of rural workers who depend on the programme for livelihood security.
Opposition MPs raised slogans and disrupted proceedings, demanding clarity from the government on whether the scheme’s identity and guarantees would be preserved. They argued that MGNREGA is not merely a welfare measure but a statutory right, and any attempt to rebrand it would erode its credibility.
Government representatives maintained that reforms were aimed at improving efficiency and accountability, but did not confirm details regarding a name change. The treasury benches accused the Opposition of politicising the issue without waiting for official clarification.
The uproar led to repeated adjournments of the House, with Speaker urging members to maintain decorum. The debate highlighted the deep political divide over rural employment policies, with the Opposition insisting that MGNREGA must remain untouched as a guarantee of work for the poor.
