Jammu and Kashmir continues to experience dry and cold conditions as the Chillai Kalan period, the harshest 40 days of winter, is underway. Meteorological officials have reported clear skies with daytime temperatures remaining low and night temperatures dropping further, leading to widespread frost in several areas.
The weather department has advised residents to take necessary precautions against the cold, particularly in higher altitude regions, where temperatures are expected to remain below freezing. Light snow is possible in some upper reaches, but no major snowfall or precipitation is expected during this phase.
Authorities have also warned farmers to protect crops from frost and have urged people to dress warmly and avoid exposure to extreme cold. The Chillai Kalan, which lasts until January 31, is traditionally considered a critical period for winter preparedness in the region, with local administrations on alert to provide assistance where needed.
