The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved a US$695 million disbursement to Sri Lanka under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) programme, providing crucial support for the country’s economic recovery efforts. This marks the latest tranche of assistance as part of the IMF’s ongoing engagement with Colombo.
The IMF noted that Sri Lanka has made progress in stabilizing its economy following last year’s crisis, but emphasized the need for continued reforms in fiscal management, debt restructuring, and governance. The disbursement is expected to strengthen foreign reserves and support essential imports, including fuel and medicines.
Sri Lanka’s government welcomed the approval, stating that the funds will help sustain macroeconomic stability and reinforce confidence among international partners. Officials highlighted that the EFF programme remains central to the country’s path toward debt sustainability and long-term growth.
Observers point out that while IMF support provides immediate relief, Sri Lanka must maintain momentum in structural reforms to ensure lasting recovery and resilience against future shocks.
