The US Supreme Court has blocked President Donald Trump’s attempt to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, ruling in a narrow 5–4 decision that the President failed to provide her the statutory protections required under the Federal Reserve Act.
Lisa Cook, the first Black woman to serve on the Fed’s Board of Governors, will remain in her position while her legal challenge continues, marking a significant moment in protecting the independence of the Federal Reserve.
The Court emphasized that Fed governors can only be removed “for cause,” and such action requires due process, including notice and opportunity to respond, which was not afforded in this case.
The ruling is seen as a setback to Trump’s expansive view of presidential authority over independent agencies, while reinforcing the Fed’s credibility and non-partisan role in setting monetary policy.
Markets and analysts welcomed the decision, noting that it reassures investors about the stability of monetary governance and limits political interference in the Federal Reserve’s functioning.
