The Government of India has waived excise duty on petrol variants blended with 22% to 30% ethanol, including E22, E25, E27, and E30, effective June 11, 2026.
This exemption sets the excise duty rate at nil, aiming to strengthen India’s biofuel programme and reduce dependence on imported crude oil.
The notification was issued under Section 5A of the Central Excise Act, 1944, and requires compliance with Bureau of Indian Standards (IS 19850:2026) for ethanol-petrol blends.
Officials highlighted that the move will promote cleaner fuels, support renewable energy adoption, and boost farmer incomes through increased demand for ethanol production.
The waiver is expected to benefit consumers, oil companies, and the sugar industry, while contributing to India’s broader energy security and environmental goals.
