The Congress on Wednesday questioned whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi would raise South Africa’s concerns with former US President Donald Trump, whom it referred to as his “good friend”. The party said the government must clarify India’s stand as global attention turns to the upcoming diplomatic engagements involving both leaders.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the Prime Minister should tell the nation if he intends to take up South Africa’s position with Trump during their next interaction. He added that the government must show consistency in its foreign policy and act in the interest of nations that consider India a strategic partner.
“The Prime Minister never hesitates to project his personal equations with global leaders. Now that he shares a warm relationship with Donald Trump, the nation deserves to know whether he will convey South Africa’s concerns to him,” Ramesh said in a statement.
The Congress leader further said that India must stand firmly on principles of international cooperation, particularly when a friendly nation expects support. He added that South Africa has taken clear positions on several global issues, and New Delhi should ensure its concerns are represented appropriately.
The remarks come amid ongoing international discussions in which South Africa’s stance has gained attention. The Congress said that the Prime Minister should use his global influence to ensure that India’s foreign policy remains balanced, transparent, and in the interest of all partners.
The BJP has not yet reacted to the Congress’ comments.
