India has announced a $450 million reconstruction package to support Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the devastating cyclone that struck the island nation earlier this month. The assistance aims to help restore critical infrastructure, rehabilitate affected communities, and strengthen disaster resilience measures.
According to officials, the package will cover rebuilding of housing, healthcare facilities, schools, and essential public services in cyclone-affected regions. It will also include support for restoring power supply, transport networks, and livelihood programs to ensure rapid recovery for displaced families.
The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that the initiative reflects India’s commitment to its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and solidarity with Sri Lanka during this humanitarian crisis. The aid package is expected to be disbursed in phases, with priority given to urgent rehabilitation needs.
Authorities noted that the reconstruction package will also focus on climate-resilient infrastructure and disaster preparedness, ensuring long-term sustainability in vulnerable coastal areas. Technical expertise and collaboration between Indian and Sri Lankan agencies will be mobilized to expedite recovery efforts.
Officials concluded that India’s $450 million support underscores the deep bilateral ties between the two countries and highlights New Delhi’s role as a reliable partner in regional stability and humanitarian assistance.
