Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to flag off India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper train between Kolkata and Guwahati in the coming days. The new service marks a significant expansion of the Vande Bharat brand into long-distance overnight travel.
The 16-coach train has completed high-speed trials and certification, with officials confirming that it is ready for launch. Designed for journeys of 1,000 to 1,500 kilometers, the sleeper variant offers modern interiors, enhanced comfort, and advanced safety features.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the introduction of the sleeper version will provide faster and more comfortable travel options for passengers in eastern and northeastern India. The train is expected to reduce travel time and improve connectivity between the two regions.
The Kolkata–Guwahati corridor was chosen as the first operational route, reflecting the government’s focus on strengthening infrastructure and boosting regional development. The service will cater to both business and leisure travelers, offering a premium overnight travel experience.
The launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper train underscores Indian Railways’ modernization drive and commitment to indigenous innovation, setting a new benchmark for passenger services in the country.
