Alpine SG Pipers emerged as champions of the Global Chess League 2025, defeating defending champions Triveni Continental Kings in the final held in Mumbai. The victory marked a historic moment as the Pipers denied the Kings a third consecutive crown.
Grandmasters R Praggnanandhaa and Anish Giri played pivotal roles in the triumph. Giri outclassed China’s Wei Yi in both games of the final, while Praggnanandhaa overcame compatriot Vidit Gujarathi after an opening draw. Their performances provided the backbone of the team’s success.
Leon Luke Mendonca also impressed on the prodigy board, recording six victories in his debut season and adding crucial points to the team tally. The Pipers won the first rapid match 4–2 and sealed the title with a 4.5–1.5 victory in the second match.
PBG Alaskan Knights secured third place after edging Ganges Grandmasters in a tie-break, rounding off a competitive season of the league. The Global Chess League, backed by Tech Mahindra and FIDE, continues to grow as a premier team chess event, showcasing international talent and promoting the sport globally.
The victory highlighted India’s rising chess stars, with Praggnanandhaa’s success reinforcing his stature as a leading young grandmaster. The league’s conclusion also underscored the importance of team formats in modern chess, blending strategy, consistency, and collective strength.
