Another earthquake measuring 6.1 magnitude struck off Nias Island in Indonesia’s North Sumatra province, according to the country’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency. The tremor occurred at 1:02 p.m. local time, with its epicentre located about 147 kilometres southeast of South Nias Regency at a depth of 29 kilometres.
Authorities said the earthquake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami. There were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage following the tremor.
The earthquake came amid heightened seismic activity in Indonesia, just days after a powerful earthquake struck the country’s East Nusa Tenggara province, leaving dozens dead and causing widespread damage.
The latest tremor has added to concerns among residents in affected areas, although authorities have not reported any major damage from the 6.1-magnitude earthquake.
