Early results from the Gujarat local body elections show the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leading decisively, securing control over municipal corporations and dominating panchayat outcomes. The party has registered sweeping victories across urban and rural governance bodies.
Officials reported that the BJP has won all 15 municipal corporations, including Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar, while also securing majorities in most of the 84 municipalities. The party has further consolidated its position by winning 33 of 34 district panchayats and a majority of taluka panchayats.
Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) trailed significantly, though AAP managed to make inroads in select taluka panchayats and secured the Narmada district panchayat. Analysts note that BJP’s dominance reflects its strong organizational presence and grassroots outreach in Gujarat.
Voter turnout was higher in rural areas compared to urban centers, with participation exceeding 65 percent in panchayat polls. The Election Commission highlighted that the process was conducted smoothly, with security arrangements reinforced across constituencies.
While opposition parties raised concerns over BJP’s large number of uncontested wins, the ruling party hailed the results as a mandate for its governance model. Political observers believe the outcome strengthens BJP’s position ahead of the 2027 Gujarat Assembly elections.
