The first BRICS Sherpa Meeting under India’s Chairship commenced in New Delhi on Monday, marking the beginning of a series of engagements aimed at strengthening cooperation among BRICS nations.
The meeting brought together Sherpas and Sous Sherpas from BRICS member countries, who will deliberate on key priorities and initiatives proposed by India for its Chairship year. Discussions are focused on enhancing collaboration across political, economic and people-centric pillars of the grouping.
Officials said the agenda includes issues such as global governance reforms, inclusive development, sustainable growth, digital public infrastructure, climate action, and strengthening multilateralism. The meeting is also expected to review progress made under previous BRICS commitments.
India, as Chair, has emphasized a pragmatic and result-oriented approach, with special focus on the concerns of the Global South. The Sherpa Meeting will help shape the direction of discussions at ministerial-level meetings and the BRICS Summit scheduled later this year.
The BRICS grouping, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, along with newly inducted members, continues to play an important role in addressing global economic and developmental challenges through cooperation and dialogue.
Outcomes of the Sherpa Meeting are expected to lay the groundwork for deeper engagement and consensus-building among member countries during India’s Chairship.
