India and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres have jointly emphasized the urgent need to reform the UN Security Council, arguing that the body no longer reflects contemporary global realities. The call came during a high-level debate on reaffirming international rule of law.
India’s Permanent Representative P. Harish stressed that meaningful reform must include the addition of new permanent members, noting that the Council’s credibility is being seriously tested by its inability to act decisively on global conflicts. He reiterated India’s longstanding demand for permanent membership.
UN Chief Antonio Guterres described reform as essential, warning that without change the Council risks losing legitimacy and being replaced by the “law of the jungle.” He highlighted that the UNSC’s current structure is outdated and fails to represent today’s geopolitical balance.
The joint call adds pressure on existing permanent members to consider expansion, with India, Germany, Japan, and Brazil among the nations seeking permanent seats. The move underscores growing global consensus that reform is critical to restoring the UN’s effectiveness and credibility.
