A Delhi court has acquitted former Congress Member of Parliament Sajjan Kumar in a case linked to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, citing unreliable and inconsistent witness testimonies. The case pertained to incidents of violence in Janakpuri and Vikaspuri areas of the capital.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) had filed charges against Kumar in 2015, based on complaints related to the killing of two individuals during the riots. However, the court observed that most witnesses were hearsay and failed to name Kumar for decades after the incident.
Despite the acquittal in this case, Sajjan Kumar remains in prison, serving a life sentence awarded by the Delhi High Court in 2018 for his role in another riot case involving the killing of five Sikhs in Palam.
The verdict has reignited debate over accountability in riot-related cases, with victims’ families expressing disappointment and political reactions emerging across parties.
