The e-Shram Portal completes five years today, marking a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to strengthen social security coverage for workers in India’s unorganised sector. The portal was launched on August 26, 2021, by the Ministry of Labour and Employment to create a comprehensive National Database of Unorganised Workers.
Over the past five years, the portal has recorded 31.89 crore registrations, making it one of the country’s largest digital platforms for unorganised workers. Around 11.5 lakh gig and platform workers have also registered on the portal, while women account for more than 54 per cent of the registered workforce.
Each registered worker receives a unique 12-digit Universal Account Number, providing a digital identity that helps connect them with various social security and welfare programmes. The platform has expanded beyond registration to provide access to employment opportunities, skill development, apprenticeships and pension-related services.
The e-Shram One-Stop Solution has brought multiple social security and welfare schemes together on a single platform. The portal is also integrated with services such as the National Career Service, Skill India Digital Hub and myScheme, helping workers access employment, skilling and government welfare opportunities.
The government has further expanded the platform’s accessibility by introducing multilingual services in 22 languages. With its growing coverage of migrant, construction, domestic, agricultural, gig and other unorganised workers, e-Shram is emerging as an important digital platform for India’s social security system.
