NEW DELHI, Apr 7: Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman arrived in New Delhi today for a three-day official visit, marking the first high-level outreach by Dhaka’s new government. His trip is expected to set the tone for future bilateral engagements between India and Bangladesh.
Rahman is scheduled to meet National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during his stay. Discussions will focus on strengthening trade ties, energy cooperation, and easing visa restrictions, alongside regional security concerns.
The visit comes at a time when Bangladesh is facing challenges including energy shortages and a worsening measles outbreak. Dhaka is seeking India’s support in stabilising supplies and expanding cooperation in health and technology.
Officials noted that Rahman’s meetings with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri will address trade barriers and fuel supply issues. The talks are expected to lay groundwork for Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s possible future visit to India.
Diplomatic observers see the visit as a crucial step in resetting India-Bangladesh relations under the new BNP-led government in Dhaka, with emphasis on regional stability, economic partnership, and people-to-people connectivity.
