New Delhi, March 27: Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri has categorically clarified that there is no plan for a nationwide lockdown in India. Addressing speculation triggered by the ongoing West Asia conflict and rising global crude oil prices, Puri dismissed the rumours as “completely false” and assured that the government is focused on maintaining stability in fuel supplies and protecting citizens from economic shocks.
Puri emphasized that the Centre has taken proactive measures to absorb the burden of soaring international oil prices. He highlighted that excise duty on petrol has been reduced to ₹3 per litre from ₹13, while diesel duty has been cut to zero from ₹10. These steps, he said, have significantly impacted government revenues but were necessary to shield households and businesses from inflationary pressures.
The minister reiterated that India is not passing the full impact of global crude price hikes to consumers. “The government is bearing the burden to ensure affordability and stability for citizens,” he said, adding that oil marketing companies are facing heavy losses but the Centre remains committed to public welfare.
Puri’s statement comes amid heightened concerns over the West Asia crisis, which has disrupted global energy markets. He assured that India’s energy security remains a top priority and that the government is working to maintain smooth supplies of petrol, diesel, oil, and gas despite international volatility.
By dismissing lockdown rumours and reaffirming the government’s commitment to fuel stability, Puri sought to reassure citizens and markets that India’s economic activity will continue uninterrupted while the Centre manages the challenges posed by the global crisis.
