India has urged the international community to adopt a “pragmatic engagement” with the Taliban to ensure stability in Afghanistan, during a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting that reviewed the country’s worsening humanitarian and security situation.
Speaking at the session, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN said that while New Delhi remains deeply concerned about the Taliban’s approach to human rights, terrorism, and political inclusivity, the global community must acknowledge the ground realities and maintain channels of communication to prevent further deterioration.
The envoy stressed that the Taliban must fulfil its commitments on counterterrorism, ensuring Afghan soil is not used to threaten or destabilise neighbouring countries. India highlighted the rising presence of ISIS-K and other extremist organisations, warning that unchecked terror activity could spill over and threaten regional and global security.
India also expressed alarm over the escalating humanitarian crisis, citing acute food shortages, economic collapse, and restrictions on women and girls. The representative reiterated that sustainable development in Afghanistan is impossible if women are denied access to education, employment, and public life.
Reaffirming its support for the Afghan people, India informed the Council that it continues to provide humanitarian assistance through UN agencies and global partners, including food aid, medicines, and capacity-building support.
Several UNSC members echoed India’s concerns and stressed the need for a coordinated and cautious global approach. However, the Council remained divided on the question of formal recognition for the Taliban, with deliberations expected to continue as the situation evolves.
