India has expressed concern that global confidence in the United Nations is declining due to the lack of progress on Security Council reforms.
Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, said the Council’s outdated structure, unchanged for nearly 80 years, is failing to address modern conflicts and uphold peace effectively.
He criticized the endless cycles of negotiations under the Intergovernmental Negotiations framework, noting that they have produced no tangible results.
India stressed that the Security Council’s inability to act decisively in ongoing conflicts has undermined its credibility and questioned its capacity to maintain international peace and security.
Calling for comprehensive reform, India urged expansion of the Council to reflect contemporary realities, revitalisation of the General Assembly, and strengthening of ECOSOC to advance sustainable development.
India also highlighted the need for reforms in global financial institutions to make them more representative and responsive, while reaffirming its commitment to mobilizing resources for the Global South and ensuring no country is left behind.
