Indian Grandmaster R. Vaishali created history by winning the FIDE Women’s Candidates 2026 in Cyprus, becoming the first Indian woman to claim this prestigious title. Vaishali defeated Kateryna Lagno in 48 moves with the white pieces in the 14th and final round, securing victory by half a point after a remarkable comeback in the second half of the tournament.
Her triumph now sets up a World Championship clash against reigning champion Ju Wenjun of China later this year. This milestone marks a breakthrough moment for Indian women in chess, adding to the country’s growing dominance in the sport.
Vaishali, elder sister of GM Praggnanandhaa, has been hailed for her resilience and fighting spirit, with her victory dubbed the “Miracle of Cyprus.” If she wins the upcoming World Championship, she will become the first Indian Women’s World Chess Champion.
