Justice Surya Kant was sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan, succeeding Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office in a ceremony attended by dignitaries, senior judges, and government officials.
Justice Kant will serve as Chief Justice for nearly 15 months, until his retirement in January 2027. His tenure is expected to focus on judicial reforms, enhancing efficiency in case management, and strengthening access to justice for citizens.
Known for his balanced judgments and emphasis on constitutional values, Justice Kant has previously served as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court and as a judge of the Supreme Court. His elevation marks a continuation of institutional stability within the judiciary.
