Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced that social media access will be banned for children under the age of 16.
The decision was presented as part of the Karnataka State Budget 2026–27, with the government citing concerns over mobile addiction and its adverse impact on young students.
Officials emphasized that the measure aims to safeguard children’s mental health, improve academic focus, and encourage healthier lifestyle habits.
Karnataka becomes the first state in India to propose such a ban, sparking debates over implementation, enforcement, and its long-term impact on digital freedom and child welfare.
