The Sawalkote Hydroelectric Project (HEP) has received environment clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, marking a significant milestone in the development of one of Jammu & Kashmir’s major power generation projects.
Officials said the approval enables the project authorities to move ahead with the remaining statutory requirements and initiate the next phase of execution. The clearance covers environmental safeguards, mitigation measures, and compliance conditions that will guide the project’s implementation.
The Sawalkote HEP, proposed on the Chenab River, is aimed at strengthening the Union Territory’s power generation capacity and contributing to long-term energy security. The project is expected to boost local employment opportunities during both the construction and operational stages.
The Jammu & Kashmir administration welcomed the Centre’s decision, noting that the environment clearance will accelerate progress on key infrastructure plans and support the region’s broader economic development goals.
Authorities added that all necessary environmental, safety, and rehabilitation guidelines will be strictly followed as the project moves forward
