Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan chaired a review meeting on April 18–19, 2026 with state and UT rural development ministers to assess the implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). The meeting focused on ensuring uninterrupted work opportunities, timely job availability, and prompt wage payments to rural households.
Chouhan emphasized that MGNREGA continues to be a cornerstone of rural livelihood security and directed states to strengthen monitoring and accountability mechanisms. He stressed that delays in wage disbursement undermine the credibility of the scheme and must be avoided at all costs.
The Minister also reviewed preparedness for the rollout of the upcoming Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin), which aims to expand livelihood opportunities and integrate skill development with employment generation. He urged states to align their rural development strategies with the new mission to maximize benefits for workers.
Officials presented progress reports showing increased person-days of employment in several states compared to the previous year. Chouhan reiterated that MGNREGA must continue to serve as a safety net for rural households, particularly during periods of agricultural uncertainty and climate-related challenges.
By reinforcing MGNREGA’s implementation and preparing for new livelihood initiatives, the government aims to ensure that rural communities across India, including Jammu and other regions, have access to stable employment and income security in the months ahead.
