Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Defence has announced that a special aircraft will be deployed to carry the bodies of 84 Iranian sailors. The move comes as part of coordinated efforts between Colombo and Tehran to ensure the dignified repatriation of the deceased.
Officials confirmed that the arrangements are being made in consultation with Iranian authorities, with Sri Lanka extending logistical support for the transportation. The Defence Ministry emphasized that the operation reflects humanitarian cooperation and respect for international obligations.
The sailors had lost their lives in a recent maritime incident, drawing attention to safety and security challenges in regional waters. The repatriation is expected to provide closure to families while reinforcing bilateral ties between Sri Lanka and Iran.
The Ministry noted that the special aircraft will depart from Colombo once final clearances are completed, underscoring Sri Lanka’s commitment to assisting in humanitarian operations and fostering goodwill with partner nations.
