Northern Railway has introduced scratch rakes in its Jammu Division to minimize delays caused by dense winter fog and ensure passenger convenience. The initiative aims to maintain punctuality during the season when train operations are frequently disrupted.
Scratch rakes are fully prepared standby train sets that can be deployed when the original rake of a train is delayed significantly due to fog or operational issues. According to officials, these rakes will be pressed into service if the original rake is delayed by seven hours or more, or when the delay is indefinite.
The arrangement currently covers Train No. 12414 Jammu Tawi–Ajmer Express and Train Nos. 22478/22477 Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra–New Delhi–Katra Express. The move is expected to reduce cascading delays across the network and provide relief to passengers during peak winter disruptions.
Divisional Railway Manager Vivek Kumar directed the initiative, with senior commercial and operations managers coordinating the deployment. Officials emphasized that the measure reflects Northern Railway’s commitment to passenger convenience and operational efficiency.
Dense fog has historically disrupted train schedules across North India, particularly in Jammu Division. By keeping scratch rakes ready, Northern Railway hopes to ensure timely departures and arrivals, offering a practical solution to one of the most persistent seasonal challenges.
