The higher reaches of Kashmir witnessed fresh snowfall on Wednesday as the ongoing wet spell persisted across the Valley. Popular tourist destinations including Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam were covered in a fresh layer of snow, while Srinagar and other low-lying areas experienced steady rainfall.
Officials from the Meteorological Department said the fresh precipitation has kept day temperatures below normal, adding to the winter chill. The continuous wet spell has disrupted daily life, with waterlogging reported in several parts of Srinagar and slippery conditions making travel difficult in hilly areas.
Farmers expressed concern over the prolonged rains, warning that excess moisture could affect early spring agricultural activities. Meanwhile, authorities have issued advisories urging residents in higher reaches to remain cautious, as landslide-prone zones and snow-covered roads pose risks to commuters.
Despite the challenges, the snowfall has rekindled tourist interest, with visitors flocking to Gulmarg and Sonamarg to enjoy the scenic winter landscapes. Hoteliers and tour operators reported a rise in bookings, describing the snow as a boost for Kashmir’s tourism sector.
Weather officials said the current wet spell is likely to continue for another couple of days before conditions gradually improve. They added that the fresh snow has replenished water reserves in the region, which will benefit rivers and streams during the summer months.
