New Delhi, October 1: President Droupadi Murmu has said Mahatma Gandhi’s message of peace and non-violence remains deeply relevant at a time when several parts of the world continue to face war, unrest and conflict.
In her message ahead of Gandhi Jayanti, President Murmu said Gandhi’s life and work continue to offer a reminder of the importance of resolving differences through dialogue and peaceful means.
She said the world is passing through a difficult period, with conflicts affecting communities and countries. In such circumstances, Gandhi’s belief in non-violence and peaceful coexistence assumes added importance, she said.
The President also spoke about Gandhi’s idea of Sarvodaya, which places the welfare of everyone at the heart of social progress. She said the principle is relevant to India’s development efforts and the country’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
According to President Murmu, economic and social progress should go hand in hand with compassion and inclusion. She said development must create opportunities for all sections of society and ensure that no one is left behind.
She urged citizens to remember Gandhi not only on his birth anniversary but also through their actions and conduct. His values of truth, simplicity, service and non-violence, she said, can continue to guide society in addressing contemporary challenges.
The President also called upon people to contribute to nation-building and work towards an empowered, developed and self-reliant India.
Gandhi Jayanti is observed every year on October 2 to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The United Nations also observes the occasion as the International Day of Non-Violence.
Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violent action and peaceful resistance continues to be remembered internationally as an approach to addressing injustice and resolving disputes without violence.
