President Droupadi Murmu conferred the National Teachers Awards 2026 on 48 outstanding school teachers at a ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on September 5, marking Teachers’ Day. The awards recognise educators who have made exceptional contributions to improving the quality of school education and enriching the lives of their students.
The awardees were selected through a rigorous and transparent three-stage process at the district, state and national levels. They represent 27 States, seven Union Territories and six Central Government organisations, reflecting the diversity of India’s education system. Short documentaries highlighting the exemplary work and achievements of each awardee were also showcased during the ceremony.
Addressing the gathering, President Murmu stressed that quality education is essential for building a developed India. She highlighted the important role of teachers in nurturing talent, strengthening character and guiding students to become responsible and compassionate citizens. She also emphasised the need for educators to continually update their knowledge, embrace technology and adopt innovative teaching methods while encouraging independent thinking and a spirit of enquiry among students.
The President said that teachers have a lasting influence on the lives of students and play a crucial role in shaping the future of the nation. The National Teachers Awards seek to celebrate such dedicated educators whose commitment, innovation and hard work have helped transform classroom learning and provide better opportunities for children.
Teachers’ Day is observed every year on September 5 to commemorate the birth anniversary of former President, philosopher and eminent educationist Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. The occasion serves as a reminder of the invaluable contribution of teachers to education, character-building and nation-building.
