The Ministry of Railways has clarified that there is no official provision for serving Halal-certified food in trains, following a notice issued by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The clarification comes amid queries regarding catering practices on passenger services.
Railway officials stated that meals provided onboard are sourced through approved catering contractors and conform to general food safety standards prescribed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). They emphasized that no specific certification, including Halal, is mandated under existing railway catering guidelines.
The NHRC had sought details on the matter after receiving a complaint alleging selective certification in railway catering services. In its response, the Railways reiterated that catering arrangements are designed to ensure hygiene, safety, and quality for all passengers, without reference to religious or community-specific certifications.
Officials further noted that passengers are free to choose from vegetarian and non-vegetarian options available onboard, and that the catering policy remains neutral, inclusive, and compliant with national food safety regulations.
The clarification underscores the Railways’ position that its catering services are governed solely by statutory food safety norms, with no provision for Halal certification or similar endorsements.
