India has cautioned that reforms of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will fail if expansion is limited only to the non-permanent category of membership.
Speaking at the UN, India stressed that genuine reform must include enlargement in both permanent and non-permanent categories to reflect contemporary global realities. Officials argued that restricting expansion to non-permanent seats would perpetuate existing imbalances and undermine the Council’s credibility.
India reiterated its long-standing demand for permanent membership, highlighting that the current structure does not adequately represent developing nations and emerging powers. It emphasized that equitable representation is essential for the UNSC to remain effective and legitimate in addressing global challenges.
The statement comes amid ongoing negotiations on UNSC reform, where several member states have expressed divergent views on the scope and nature of expansion. India underscored that piecemeal reforms would not meet the aspirations of the wider UN membership.
By pressing for comprehensive reform, India reaffirmed its position that only a balanced enlargement of both categories can ensure the UNSC’s relevance in the 21st century.
