CHANDIGARH, Apr 6: Success in life is not measured only by awards or achievements but by the strength of one’s character, integrity, and the courage to rise after setbacks, Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan told students on Monday. Addressing the eighth convocation of Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University of Science and Technology at Murthal in Haryana’s Sonipat, he urged graduates to cultivate patience and positivity, reminding them that those who endure hardships with resilience ultimately emerge victorious.
Expressing concern over the growing menace of substance abuse, the Vice-President appealed to youth to firmly reject drugs and instead embrace a life of health, purpose, and service. “Drugs destroy not only individuals but also families and communities. Say a firm ‘no’ to drugs and become ambassadors of a drug-free society,” he said.
Radhakrishnan also spoke about the transformative power of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Robotics, Quantum Computing, and Green innovations. He encouraged students to approach these fields with curiosity and responsibility, using knowledge as a tool for nation-building. He underlined the need to decolonise mindsets, stressing that true education must liberate thought, instil confidence in India’s heritage, and foster pride in its intellectual traditions.
Paying tribute to Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram, he described him as a towering symbol of integrity and social justice who dedicated his life to uplifting farmers and marginalised communities. Chhotu Ram’s emphasis on cooperative institutions and equitable land practices, he noted, laid the foundation for Haryana’s agricultural progress and India’s food security.
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a Viksit Bharat, the Vice-President said Atmanirbhar Bharat is a call for innovation, self-confidence, and indigenous solutions. He cited India’s vaccine development during the Covid-19 pandemic as an example of self-reliance and global responsibility.
Congratulating the graduating students, Radhakrishnan expressed happiness that nearly 64 percent of gold medal winners were women, calling it a reflection of women-led development. He noted that initiatives like “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” have improved Haryana’s gender ratio, making the state a model of social transformation and inclusivity.
The convocation was attended by Haryana Governor and University Chancellor Ashim Kumar Ghosh, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, and Vice-Chancellor Shree Prakash Singh. CM Saini highlighted Haryana’s progress in education, sports, research, and industry, and said the government is focusing on skill development to ensure youth become self-reliant and globally competitive.
