Guwahati: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday said the government is working with a vision of ‘Vikas aur Virasat’ (development and heritage), as he inaugurated a series of waterways projects aimed at boosting connectivity and trade in the Northeast. The projects, launched under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, are expected to strengthen regional infrastructure while preserving cultural heritage.
Sonowal highlighted that the initiatives will not only improve transport efficiency but also create new opportunities for local communities. He stressed that the government’s approach combines modern development with respect for India’s traditions, ensuring that progress does not come at the cost of heritage.
The newly inaugurated projects include upgraded terminals, improved river navigation facilities, and enhanced cargo handling systems. Officials said these measures will help reduce logistics costs, promote eco-friendly transport, and open new avenues for trade across the Brahmaputra and other key waterways.
Speaking at the event, Sonowal reiterated that the government’s focus is on sustainable growth, where infrastructure development goes hand in hand with environmental responsibility and cultural preservation. He added that the waterways projects will play a crucial role in realizing the vision of a self-reliant and connected Northeast.
