New Delhi, November 11, 2025 — By-elections are being held today for eight assembly constituencies spread across seven states and one Union Territory. Voters are casting their ballots in Budgam and Nagrota (Jammu & Kashmir), Anta (Rajasthan), Ghatshila (Jharkhand), Jubilee Hills (Telangana), Tarn Taran (Punjab), Dampa (Mizoram), and Nuapada (Odisha).
The by-elections were necessitated by a variety of circumstances, including resignations and vacancies due to the demise of sitting legislators. In Budgam, the seat was vacated after Omar Abdullah chose to retain Ganderbal, while Nagrota’s bypoll follows the passing of BJP leader Devender Singh Rana. Other constituencies are witnessing contests shaped by local political dynamics and party strategies.
Polling began this morning with voters turning out steadily across constituencies. The Election Commission has set up hundreds of polling stations to ensure smooth conduct of the elections, with security arrangements tightened to maintain order. In Budgam alone, 173 polling stations have been established, while Nagrota has 150 stations to accommodate voters.
A total of 20 candidates are contesting in Budgam, including representatives from the National Conference, PDP, and BJP. In Jubilee Hills, BRS candidate Maganti Sunitha was among the early voters, reflecting the high-profile nature of contests in several constituencies. Tarn Taran, Anta, Ghatshila, Dampa, and Nuapada are also witnessing competitive races with regional parties vying for influence.
The counting of votes is scheduled for November 14, 2025, alongside the Bihar Assembly election results. These by-elections are expected to provide insights into regional political trends and voter sentiment ahead of larger electoral battles.
