Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Dr. Virendra Kumar has introduced the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill in Parliament. The proposed legislation seeks to strengthen existing provisions and ensure greater inclusivity and protection for transgender individuals across the country.
The amendment bill aims to address gaps in the current law by enhancing safeguards against discrimination, improving access to welfare schemes, and ensuring equal opportunities in education, healthcare, and employment. It also proposes measures to streamline grievance redressal mechanisms and reinforce accountability in implementation.
Dr. Kumar emphasized that the government is committed to upholding the dignity and rights of transgender persons, noting that the amendments are designed to empower the community and promote social justice. He said the bill reflects India’s broader vision of equality and inclusivity under constitutional values.
The introduction of the amendment bill has drawn attention from rights groups and civil society organizations, who have long advocated for stronger legal protections and better integration of transgender persons into mainstream society. The debate on the bill is expected to highlight key issues of representation, welfare, and social acceptance.
