Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the designation of Surha Tal in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, as India’s 100th Ramsar site, marking a milestone in the country’s commitment to wetland conservation. He said the recognition reflects India’s growing global leadership in protecting ecological treasures and biodiversity.
Surha Tal, a freshwater lake spread across more than 34 square kilometers, is home to diverse flora and fauna, including migratory birds. Its inclusion in the Ramsar list underscores the importance of preserving wetlands as vital ecosystems that support livelihoods, regulate water cycles, and mitigate climate change impacts.
Modi emphasized that the achievement strengthens India’s environmental stewardship, aligning with the nation’s broader vision of sustainable development. He noted that wetlands like Surha Tal are not only ecological assets but also cultural and community lifelines.
