At least 15 infants were killed after a fire broke out at a hospital in Islamabad, Pakistan, on Wednesday morning. The blaze erupted in a ward where newborns were receiving medical care.
According to reports, several newborns were inside the ward when the fire broke out. Rescue teams and firefighters rushed to the hospital and brought the blaze under control.
Initial reports suggested that the fire may have been linked to a fault in the hospital’s air-conditioning system, although the exact cause has not yet been established. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed officials to conduct an immediate inquiry and identify those responsible for any negligence. He also called for appropriate action based on the findings of the investigation.
The tragic incident has raised fresh concerns over fire safety, emergency preparedness and infrastructure conditions at public hospitals in Pakistan.
