Srinagar, July 3: A tragic incident occurred during the ongoing Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra as a pilgrim from Punjab was found dead in a hotel at Sonamarg, Ganderbal district. Officials confirmed that the deceased was identified as Narinder Kumar, 40, son of Parminder Kumar, and a resident of Barnala, Punjab.
According to reports, Kumar was staying at a hotel in Sonamarg when he was discovered unconscious by staff and fellow pilgrims. He was immediately shifted to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) Sonamarg, where doctors declared him dead after completing medico-legal formalities.
Police authorities have initiated inquest proceedings under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to ascertain the exact cause of death. Further investigation is currently underway.
The incident has cast a shadow over the pilgrimage, which commenced on July 3, 2026, with thousands of devotees arriving from across the country to undertake the sacred journey to the Amarnath cave shrine.
Officials assured that all necessary legal and procedural steps are being followed, and the family of the deceased has been informed. The administration reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all pilgrims during the Yatra.
