The annual Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra 2026 formally began on July 3 as the first groups of pilgrims set out simultaneously from the twin base camps of Baltal in Ganderbal district and Pahalgam in Anantnag district. The commencement of the pilgrimage marks the start of the sacred journey to the holy cave shrine in South Kashmir, which will continue until August 28.
Officials confirmed that the inaugural batches were flagged off early in the morning amid chants of devotion, with thousands of registered pilgrims embarking on the trek under tight security arrangements. The Baltal route, known for its shorter but steeper climb, and the Pahalgam route, offering a longer but more gradual trek, both witnessed enthusiastic participation from devotees.
The administration has deployed multi-layered security measures, including Central Armed Police Forces, J&K Police, Army units, drone surveillance, and RFID tagging of pilgrims. Medical aid, food, and shelter facilities have been arranged along both routes, with strict adherence to registered travel dates emphasized for smooth conduct of the Yatra.
Authorities appealed to devotees to follow guidelines and cooperate with officials, stressing that discipline and preparedness are essential for the safe and successful conduct of the pilgrimage. The commencement of the Yatra is seen as a significant spiritual and cultural event, drawing devotees from across India to the revered cave shrine.
