The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is celebrating 10 years of the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) with the launch of the ‘A Decade of Care’ campaign in New Delhi today.
Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda is presiding over the inaugural ceremony, which marks a decade of PMSMA’s contribution to maternal and neonatal healthcare across India.
PMSMA was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 9th June 2016 to provide free, comprehensive, and quality antenatal care services to all pregnant women on the 9th of every month.
Over the past decade, PMSMA has emerged as a cornerstone of India’s maternal health strategy, offering nine assured free services including diagnostics, counselling, and specialist consultations.
The initiative has particularly focused on identifying and managing high-risk pregnancies, enabling timely medical interventions and reducing complications during childbirth.
As part of the 10-year celebrations, awareness and outreach activities are being organised across States and Union Territories to encourage pregnant women and their families to avail themselves of the scheme’s benefits.
To commemorate the milestone, a special ₹75 coin and a ₹5 postal stamp are being released, symbolising the government’s commitment to safe motherhood.
PMSMA has been integrated with complementary programmes such as LaQshya, SUMAN, and Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram, strengthening India’s maternal healthcare ecosystem.
The Ministry of Health notes that PMSMA has played a vital role in reducing India’s Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) and continues to support the broader Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCH+A) strategy.
With the ‘A Decade of Care’ campaign, the government reaffirms its vision of dignified, accessible, and quality healthcare for every mother and child in India.
