India is set to establish its first Telecom Manufacturing Zone (TMZ) in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, marking a major step towards strengthening domestic telecom production. The project will cover 350 acres and has received ₹493 crore in central assistance for Phase I infrastructure. Developed on a plug-and-play model, the zone is expected to attract investments worth ₹12,000–15,000 crore and generate around 5,000 direct jobs.
The MoU for the project was signed between the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India, and the Madhya Pradesh government on July 30, 2026, at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The zone will host facilities for manufacturing mobile phones, telecom equipment, fibre optics, semiconductors, and next-generation 5G/6G technologies.
Officials emphasized that the initiative aligns with national programs such as Atmanirbhar Bharat, Make in India, Digital India, and Viksit Bharat 2047. It is also expected to complement the India Semiconductor Mission and other electronics component schemes, positioning India as a global hub for telecom equipment manufacturing and exports.
Experts note that timely execution of infrastructure, consistent policy support, and competitive supply chains will be critical to the success of the Gwalior Telecom Manufacturing Zone. If implemented effectively, the project could significantly reduce India’s dependence on imports and boost its role in global telecom supply chains.
