Kolkata, Dec 02: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has sought a detailed clarification from the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer after reports emerged claiming 100 per cent enumeration across 2,208 polling booths in the state. Officials said the Commission wants a clear explanation on the methodology adopted and the basis on which the figures were reported.
The ECI has asked state authorities to provide booth-wise documentation and verification records, stressing that such claims must be supported by accurate and transparent data. The Commission also emphasised that enumeration processes must strictly follow all prescribed guidelines to maintain credibility and public confidence ahead of future electoral exercises.
According to sources, the Commission moved swiftly after discrepancies were flagged regarding the unusually high enumeration numbers. Officials said the ECI aims to ensure there are no procedural lapses or misreporting, as this could affect voter lists and overall poll preparedness.
State election officials have begun compiling the required details and are expected to submit a formal response to the Commission soon. They have maintained that the enumeration exercise was conducted as per norms but agreed that all supporting documents will be shared for verification.
The ECI’s intervention underscores its continued focus on ensuring transparency, accuracy, and accountability in voter registration and electoral roll management across all states.
