The Election Commission of India has released a fact sheet explaining how the country’s electoral system works and the safeguards put in place to protect voters and maintain the credibility of elections.
The Commission said elections for the President and Vice President, Lok Sabha and State Assemblies are conducted under the supervision of an independent constitutional authority. It also highlighted the measures used to identify voters and prevent irregularities during the polling process.
According to the Commission, Electoral Photo Identity Cards have been issued to nearly one billion electors. Voters can also use electronic versions of their voter ID cards through the Election Commission’s voter services platform.
The fact sheet clarifies that a voter can cast a ballot only at the polling station where their name is registered. The Commission said several checks are followed at polling stations to prevent impersonation, duplicate voting and other possible irregularities.
The Election Commission said these measures are part of its efforts to keep elections transparent, secure and accessible to eligible voters. The clarification comes amid continued public and political discussion over electoral procedures and voter lists.
