The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued nine notices to Swiggy Instamart following multiple consumer complaints about expired, spoiled, and unsafe food products delivered through the platform. The regulator has directed the company to submit a compliance report or face legal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Complaints included expired whey protein and packaged snacks, rotten eggs emitting foul odour, spoiled parathas, and unsafe infant food formulations resupplied even after return. Consumers also reported invalid FSSAI licence numbers and discrepancies between listed sellers and registered licences.
FSSAI has asked Swiggy Instamart to provide a detailed explanation and strengthen its food safety compliance, including seller onboarding, inventory checks, and grievance redressal mechanisms. Officials warned that failure to comply could lead to stricter penalties and prosecution.
The action is part of FSSAI’s wider crackdown on food companies and quick-commerce platforms over misleading claims, unsafe products, and licence violations. The notices highlight growing scrutiny of online food delivery services and the need for stronger consumer protection measures.
