Pakistan’s Supreme Court has directed authorities to move jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan to a hospital in Islamabad for a detailed medical examination. The order comes amid continuing concerns about the 73-year-old former premier’s health.
The court has also ordered the formation of a medical board to examine Khan and oversee his treatment. The board will include medical specialists and his personal doctor, while his sister, Dr Uzma Khan, will also be involved in the medical assessment.
The order was passed while the court was hearing petitions seeking better medical care for Khan, access to his personal doctors and greater contact with his family. The court has also directed authorities to allow Khan to meet his family members regularly and speak with his sons by telephone.
Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party has welcomed the court’s decision. The government, however, has indicated that it may challenge or seek a review of the order, particularly the decision to shift Khan to a private hospital.
Imran Khan has been in jail since 2023 in connection with several cases. His supporters have repeatedly raised concerns about his health and treatment, while authorities have maintained that he is being provided with necessary medical care.
