Tehran, August 25: Iran has warned that it will respond harshly to expanded US sanctions, with the Iranian government saying that any further escalation could have serious consequences.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said Tehran would not remain passive in the face of additional American economic pressure. He warned that countries cooperating with Washington’s sanctions campaign could also face consequences.
The warning came as the United States moved to expand sanctions targeting Iran and entities linked to its economic activities. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced measures aimed at increasing pressure on Tehran and limiting its access to international financial networks.
Iran has rejected the new measures and maintained that previous rounds of US sanctions have failed to force Tehran to change its policies. Iranian officials have also indicated that the country has prepared measures to withstand further economic pressure.
The latest escalation comes amid continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran and the unresolved situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important route for global energy shipments.
Iran’s warning has raised concerns that the widening sanctions dispute could further increase regional tensions and affect energy markets and international shipping. Diplomatic efforts to ease the confrontation are continuing, but no major breakthrough has been reported so far.
