India has achieved a major milestone by ranking 3rd globally in installed renewable energy capacity, with over 283 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity as of March 2026, trailing only China and the United States.
Solar power leads India’s renewable portfolio at 150 GW, followed by wind at 56 GW, large hydro at 51 GW, bioenergy at nearly 12 GW, and small hydro at 5 GW. Nuclear contributes an additional 8.7 GW to the non-fossil mix.
In FY 2025–26 alone, India added a record 55 GW of clean energy capacity, including 44 GW of solar and 6 GW of wind. This rapid expansion enabled India to surpass Brazil and secure the third spot globally.
India also met its Paris Agreement target of achieving 50% non-fossil installed capacity five years ahead of schedule, underscoring its commitment to energy security, climate goals, and becoming a global clean energy hub.
