India will prioritise a rule-based maritime order and the safety of seafarers during its upcoming term at the UN Security Council, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said while launching the country’s campaign for 2028–29.
Jaishankar emphasised adherence to UNCLOS to ensure free and open seas, highlighting the urgency of protecting seafarers in light of recent Gulf attacks that claimed Indian lives.
He outlined India’s six-point SHANTI agenda, which includes securing maritime commons, countering terror financing, promoting reformed multilateralism, advancing Global South concerns, future-ready peacekeeping, and responsible AI use.
India’s focus on maritime safety comes amid heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, where commercial shipping and Indian crew members have faced growing risks due to US–Iran hostilities.
The campaign underscores India’s intent to balance maritime security advocacy with broader UNSC reforms and representation for the Global South.
