The Indian Navy commissioned INS Mahe, the first vessel in the Mahe-class series of Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on November 24, 2025. Built by Cochin Shipyard Limited, the vessel embodies the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative with over 80 percent indigenous content.
Compact yet highly capable, INS Mahe is designed to hunt submarines, conduct coastal patrols, and secure India’s vital maritime approaches. Measuring about 78 metres in length and displacing 1,100 tonnes, the vessel is equipped with advanced sonar and weapon systems tailored for shallow-water operations.
The commissioning ceremony was hosted by Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command, and presided over by Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi. Officials emphasized that the induction of INS Mahe marks a significant step in strengthening India’s coastal defence and enhancing jointness among the armed forces.
The Indian Navy stated that INS Mahe represents a new generation of indigenous combatants, reflecting India’s growing self-reliance in defence shipbuilding and its commitment to safeguarding national maritime interests.
